5th & 6th Grade Augusta Trip

posted Apr 14, 2014, 12:19 PM by Michael Brzezowski

The 5th and 6th grade recently took a field trip to Augusta as an extension of their social studies class.  They visited the State House and the Maine State Museum.  At the State House, they met Representative Hubbell, Senator Langley, and received a tour from Secretary of State Dunlap! A few of us even got a quick peek at some old and special documents in the Archives, such as the original Maine State Constitution.

Protect Yourself From Malware

posted Apr 14, 2014, 12:14 PM by Michael Brzezowski

I have recently talked to a few students and parents about malware on their computers.  This seems to be a constant problem and something that a lot of people are confused about.  The video on the right gives a good explanation of what malware is, how to prevent it, how to know if you have it, and what to do about it.

I hope you find this helpful.

New iPad App Rules for 7th/8th Grade Students

posted Apr 8, 2014, 8:34 AM by Michael Brzezowski

The letter below is going home to parents of 7th and 8th grade students today.  Parents will need to sign and have their student(s) return the letter to the school.

Parents,

As a district, we have been working on updating our policies and guidelines for iPad use in our elementary schools. We are taking into account the technical functionality and management of the devices, safety of our students in the digital realm, and the reduction of distraction during school hours. That the iPads are intended primarily as educational devices has been a critical point in our discussions.

We will be meeting with students to explain our updated iPad use guidelines, and we want to share those guidelines with you as well.

We will be limiting the number of Personal Choice apps to 10. Personal choice apps are defined as those apps that are not installed by MLTI, the school, or approved by teachers or administrators as schoolrelated apps. The personal choice apps allowed on the iPads will also have to follow general guidelines, and we will be maintaining an online list of specific apps that will not be allowed, and the reasons for such.

Generally, unacceptable apps are:

  • ●  Any app listed on the MDIRSS MLTI Unacceptable App List (The initial list is available at: http://www.pemeticschool.com/technology/unacceptable-ipad-apps. We will be publishing a district list later this year.)

  • ●  Violent apps

  • ●  Agerestricted apps (Apps for 13+ cannot be installed by 12 and under, 17+ apps cannot be installed)

  • ●  Apps of sexual nature

  • ●  Noneducational games

We will also have a process in place for students to obtain permission for specific apps that have not yet been OK’d as a personal choice app. For now, they may email me. If you have questions or comments please let me know at: <mbrzezowski@mdirss.org> or write your comments on the back of this page.

    Thank You,

    Mike Brzezowski

New Digital Citizenship Curriculum

posted Apr 8, 2014, 8:27 AM by Michael Brzezowski

Pemetic Elementary has implemented a new Digital Citizenship curriculum that will be taught from Kindergarten to 8th grade.  There are a total of 45 lessons planned to be given during the school year.  Due to the late start of implementing this new curriculum this year, not all lessons will be taught at all grades, but we are trying to complete as many as possible with the students and teachers.

Complete details of the lessons to be taught at each grade can be found on our Digital Citizenship page.  As always, if you have any questions or concerns, please contact the Technology Integrator, Mike Brzezowski.

Net Cetera: Chatting with Kids About Being Online

posted Apr 8, 2014, 7:57 AM by Michael Brzezowski   [ updated Apr 8, 2014, 8:09 AM ]

Here is a great video from On Guard Online about chatting with kids about being online.  This is an important conversation to have with any student, especially those with easy access to connected devices (phones, iPads, computers, etc.)
