The Pemetic School is located in the hub of Southwest Harbor. We are responsible for educating children in grades Kindergarten through grade eight, and we are a supportive learning organization for the Southwest Harbor community, in general. Our town is fortunate to have businesses and other organizations that support and are concerned for the children of this beautiful community.
When people walk into our building, they often comment that it feels warm and inviting, and that’s the most influential factor in a well organized learning environment. As educators, we see our role as helping children learn what they need to learn to be happy, healthy, and productive citizens whose knowledge, skills, and talents can contribute to our society. The basic skills acquisition is a priority with a focus on the habits of work that will be integral to their life-long skills and attitudes. We hope that our students will use creative problem solving and effective decision-making to make the world a better place. Each member of our staff adds to the value of a basic foundational education by providing role modeling, high standards and expectations, and the caring and competencies of the very best educators. We model for children as we seek to find strengths and passions in each individual, and then we build on those to help each person become the very best of themselves.
Our students are respectful and appreciative of their opportunities to learn and grow here. They evidence this in how they speak with adults and treat each other. Their teachers are highly qualified, caring, compassionate, and passionate about helping learn. Their enthusiasm and commitment transfer to students in terms of motivation, successes, accomplishments, and involvement in the community.
Students and parents work with us to provide the best education possible. Support through local funding makes it possible for our students to grow and learn in positive ways with effective resources. The beauty of the natural environment of this area provides a basis for science, art, exercise, and observation skills. The skills, talents, and knowledge of some of our local neighbors enhance the exposures and opportunities for education about our local resources and the passions of the folks that children grow up with in our community. We really believe that everybody is a teacher and everybody is a learner, with the world as our school. Personal responsibility underlies decision-making and how we all interact.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all who contribute to the “wonderfulness” of our school—the students, the staff, the parents, the community members, the School Board, and the local agencies and organizations that support and encourage the growth and learning. This is your school, and we couldn’t accomplish what needs to be done, without you ! We appreciate all you do, all you are, and all you contribute to the education of our children. THANK YOU.
With joy and pride,
Cathy Lewis, Principal
