Welcome to the website for Pemetic Elementary School! Pemetic is located in Southwest Harbor, Maine and educates approximately 145 students in kindergarten through grade 8. Staff, students, and parents, working together as a team, ensure every child experiences Pemetic as a positive, safe and caring learning community. A place where they can explore who they are, and meet their social, emotional and academic needs.
The staff at Pemetic is dedicated to offering many different types of instructional opportunities for students. Teachers partner with many area businesses and organizations to provide students with real-life, hands-on experiences. We are fortunate to be located close to Acadia National Park, surrounded by science and history, where students participate in meaningful, place-based learning experiences. Pemetic is a small school but is able to offer a variety of athletics and clubs to round out students’ educational experiences.
Pemetic strives to foster a climate and culture where all students feel valued and accepted. Only in a school community where students feel safe and are comfortable to take risks, do they shine academically. We create a true sense of community through whole-school activities such as hikes, holiday lunches, and performances. Elementary and middle school students are partnered together throughout the year to form connections between grade levels and provide mentoring experiences for older students. If you came for a visit you might see sixth graders sharing their writing with their first-grade buddies or third graders reading to kindergarteners. Students say these buddy activities are one of the aspects of Pemetic they truly love!
Having grown up in Southwest Harbor and attended Pemetic from kindergarten to grade 8, I am proud and honored to now be the principal. Throughout the school year, please do not hesitate to stop by my office or email me at if you have any questions, concerns, or ideas to share. I look forward to working with all of our students and continuing the great work already happening at Pemetic Elementary School!
Sincerely,
Rhonda Fortin
